regina mills is the queen of the silver kingdom, a small kingdom hidden within the realm, bordering the gold kingdom. born a princess, she married into her throne, falling in love with the then - prince daniel. their kingdom was happy under daniel’s rule, their economy strong and their land peaceful. despite their efforts, they never had children, the two of them making peace with their little family as it was. that was until the king heard word that his brother and his wife suffered an untimely death, orphaning his niece : snow white.
without question, they took her in, providing her a home, food, and clothing. she was treated as if she were their own, regina taking a shine to the young girl as soon as she had arrived at the palace. once snow had settled in, all would be well for a few years, until the king, too, died unexpectedly.
the kingdom entered a phase of mourning, the queen and her god - daughter donning all black, sadly welcoming visiting diplomats, accepting gifts and kind words from the other royal families. the procession was full to the brim with families from nearly every kingdom except, notably, one. the king of the gold kingdom was not present, instead, sending a gift and a kind note to the queen.
a scribble on the parchment, beneath his words about the king, read, ‘ a peculiar artifact i found during my travels. be warned, it is imbued with magic. ’ and beneath the white cloth, an extravagant mirror could be found, large and ovular, framed with delicate silver vines. legend had it, the mirror carried a dark curse, one which would feed on its victims, pulling their worst attributes out of them, preying on insecurities and traumas. but stories of such a mirror fell on deaf ears as the years passed, the legend slowly fading away with the seasons. that was, until, the curse befell the queen.
