a dark brow is risen, chin lifted ever so slightly. his candor, though charming, was entirely out of place. he was entirely out of place. the frustration that bubbles within her should be pointed towards him, but it stemmed entirely from the fact that she liked the behavior far more than she cared to admit. the queen had vastly more important matters to deal with. she was concerned mother, grieving widow, queen of a kingdom on the brink of war, not to mention the mirror residing rooms away, calling out to her constantly.

without argument, regina had no business flirting with him, but that had not stopped her as of yet. her mind could not separate truth from fiction, but he was very real and he made it so easy to play along. she allows a whisper of a smile to accompany otherwise stony features, manicured hand resting on her hip as a warm rasp drips off of crimson lips like honey.   ‘   perhaps you have confused love with something else entirely. it is a rather deceptive emotion, after all.   ’   a quiet hum fills the silence before she continues.   ‘   though, i’m sure if you took the time to explore the topic you could figure it out in no time.   ’

There were times, during his years of solitude, where he would try and remember details of the life he’d lost. What her skin felt like under his touch, the pitch of her voice against his ears, and the taste of her lips  –––  that varied the most. He’d try to pin it down; think of apples, vanilla, cider… any common flavours that together could never add up to what they truly were like. At that moment, he comes to know it again. He finds the answer: that kissing her is nothing that could be easily summarised, simply described. It was like coming up for air when his lungs screamed, like seeing after years in the dark. It was freedom from the prison he’d be living in.

She was all he needed. When they part, he isn’t sorry for it. Not when they are both still there, and the reminder of all this being real coming back to him. David smiles wider than he’s had for years, the kind that lights up his very eyes and makes him damn nearly fly away from the ground.  ❛  I have, she’s been with me for the last few months.  ❜   His eyes keep running over her features, wanting to commit every last bit of them to memory. His hands are calmer, only with his thumb stroking over her cheek.

❛  Regina, she’s perfect.  ❜  A chuckle passes through the lump of his throat; one formed by the overwhelming joy that was consuming him at that moment. Tears may threaten his eyes, but he refused to let his vision be blurred and miss any of this.  ❛  She reminds me so much of you…  ❜  His hand moves up to put a strand of her hair behind her ear, nearly forgetting the rest of the questions she’d asked.

But when he does, he manages to find some inkling of grounding and remembers how there was a clock in fact ticking against them.  ❛  She’s here. The kids have come to get Mal, there was… some thing with her, I don’t know the details. King Ben came along. Evie is handling it. We’re supposed to meet her and the others in an hour at the bridge.  ❜  After delivering the pressing matters, David takes a breath and fixes his gaze on hers.  ❛  We’re getting you out of here. Evie’s talked to Ben, it’s all arranged. You’re coming home with us. ❜

memory brings her back to time when evie had been much smaller, the world much bigger in her eyes. she had so many queries and quizzes regina could not find answers for, and to disappoint her each time with responses barely strung together   — it left both of them hurt and confused. still, there was always a small flicker of hope within the fallen queen’s chest that perhaps there would be a day when they could all be together.

then, the news of ben’s experiment arrived, a lucky break if ever there was one for the group of friends. in the wake of the excitement, regina packed her broken heart away, grateful that evie would get a chance to know her father. after all, regina could be alone forever if it meant that those she loved could have the happiness she so longed for.

‘   i used to tell her so many stories about you. you better not have dissa  —  uhhh …   ’   in the middle of what would have been a perfectly timed insult, his words catch up to her, her heart seemingly sucked down into her stomach. it took almost all of her focus to keep her jaw from gaping, the rest sending dark irises to scan over his face, looking for some hint of betrayal. the words seemed too good to be true, and for a moment all she could do was repeat them to herself, searching for some hidden meaning within them.   ‘   i am coming … home with you.   ’

and once more, this time with a touch more confidence, she repeats the words she has been waiting to hear for nearly two decades.   ‘   i’m coming home with you.   ’   suddenly, a smile invades her features, tears threatening to fall as wandering eyes finally make contact with his. warm, soft hands rest on either side of his face, now her turn to kiss him. there were no words that could convey the distinct change that overtook her entire body. she felt as if she were floating, her usual instincts dampened as she just allowed herself to be in the moment.

David is caught off guard by the remark. A light frown creases his brow, but it isn’t more prominent than the smile that had began to spread across his lips. Had she just been nice to him? On the risk of ruining the moment, he takes the win in silence with nothing more than a chuckle that escapes under his breath; he doesn’t trust his tongue not to say something it shouldn’t if he were to thank her for it.   ❛  She was.  ❜   Ruth is a subject he does feel free to talk about; her very memory filling his heart and bringing him a familiar sense of calm. It had become that way now, so many years after her passing.   ❛  The strongest I knew.  ❜   Looking the queen’s way, he offers an olive branch.   ❛  Y'know, I think you would have liked her. She liked to give me a hard time when I was being an idiot.  ❜

image

‘   was she ever not giving you a hard time, then ?   ’   a smirk slowly pulls at one side of her mouth. she enjoyed their banter, especially now that it was starting to become friendly. regina, at one time, never thought they would get here, but now that they were, she was unexpectedly content.   ‘   you have had the pleasure of meeting my mother, so i suppose there isn’t much for me to offer you on that topic. i’m sure you can imagine.   ’   her smile doesn’t falter. perhaps at one point it would have. then, she would have been upset at the very thought of her mother, a swirl of raw, neglected emotions coming to surface. now, she remains unshaken, having long made peace with her past. it was a comforting feeling, felt like holding up a trophy in front of an auditorium. she had made it through the worst and she was better for it.

❛  At least you got some good advice.  ❜  David refrains from voicing his thoughts, which were arguing in favor of Henry Sr. not having given her any good advice if she ended up the way she had. He’s working on his tact.  ❛  My father didn’t stick around for long enough to impart much of anything better than questionable advice.  ❜

image

‘   his loss.   ’   she says so matter - of - factly, as if there was no room for argument, because there was not. though she was not usually in the business of giving the prince compliments, regina could tell he had more to say about her relationship with her father. he always had more to say, but the restraint is familiar to her and she can read it on his face. it was something she appreciated, at least.   ‘   your mom must have been a strong woman.   ’   she had heard the tales snow white told of the woman, the gentle kindness in her eyes when she spoke of her. though she knew nothing else about her, she thought it was a fairly good estimation.

David’s curiosity is piqued as Regina answers to his ramblings with something that sounds like valuable advice. Usually, he’d expect her to cut him off or ignore him completely. Instead, he receives an irrefutable truth that, coming from her, confuses him.  ❛  Really? I thought you liked your father.  ❜

image

‘   he tried his best.   ’   it was not on purpose that she responded so flatly, but she compliments it with a shrug of her shoulders.   ‘   he gave me some good advice, but he gave me some questionable advice at times.   ’

❛  I should’ve stayed on the farm, I should’ve listened to my old man.  ❜

‘   in my experience,   ’   a dark brow is lifted, an earnest glimmer in her eye. you would think she was going to tell you the very meaning of life.   ‘   there is not a single person alive whose life would be improved if they had taken their father’s advice.   ’

❛  Unless you know another person who gladly goes by Dopey, then yeah, that one.  ❜   Though he speaks with a smile on his lips, his distaste for the dwarves was well known. Not only by her, but throughout the kingdom. King David had never gotten along with the Snow White’s seven friends, even if him and the woman had always been on friendly terms. He’d think that would have worked out in his favor when Evie had first introduced them, but there had been no such luck.

But now, they had strength in numbers. David steps closer to her, letting his hand rest on the small of her back. Leaning in, he lays a lingering kiss on the corner of her mouth.  ❛  If it makes you feel any better, I’ve given him and his son quite a few nasty looks myself.  ❜   Maybe it wasn’t the best kind of behavior to be promoting, what with her trying to prove she’s turned a new leaf and all, but he’d do anything to make her smile.  ❛  Not that she’s told me. But we could always invite him over for dinner sometime and give him a good scare. Personally, I like to wear my sword when he’s around.  ❜

it was, by no surprise to her, an unquestionable fact that her husband held a particular dislike for the seven little men. it made perfect sense, even had they not been responsible for her near death. they were seven insufferable personalities, always together, always equally obnoxious in their peculiarities. the queen knew evie was quite the little charmer, but she could not be sure that they would separate their hatred for her from her daughter. though, she was sure it was not a problem that could not be solved.

her mind ran with possibilities, keeping her occupied enough so, that she hadn’t noticed his proximity until he was leaning into her, a gesture she welcomed happily. a gentle smile pulled at her lips, a soft hum rumbling in her throat before she spoke.   ‘   i am sure you have. i would not want to be on the other end of one of your scowls.   ’   she speaks with an ominous tone, a humorous exaggeration of what she was sure was nothing more than a furrowed brow and a disapproving frown.   ‘   i suppose we invite him just to see the look of pure terror on his face. i am positive he must be horrified at the idea of meeting me.   ’   surely, he saw it an advantage that regina was locked away on the isle; no worry of ever having to face the evil queen his family had told him about. irony was a funny thing, though.
