without your past, you could never have arrived so wondrously and brutally, by design or some violent, exquisite happenstance

‘   all i’m saying is,   ’   whatever it was she was saying, it was quite loud. intentionally, considering his highness was just within earshot.   ‘   it’s not exactly hard to keep crime rates low in the woodlands. there’s only, like, five people in the whole fable community who can afford to live here. but let’s ignore the root of the problem, huh ?   ’   /   @bemonsters .

‘   i’m not in the mood, david !   ’   she doesn’t give him the satisfaction of her jumping, but her arms are both above her head reaching for the object david held in his grasp.   ‘   stop it ! i know i’m short, you don’t have to remind me !   ’   she steps back with a huff, stamping her foot. she doesn’t say anything else, just glares at him.   /   @bemonsters !

For so long, the thought of delivering such news to her face to face had been nothing but a pipe dream. So distant, so out of reach that it could not exist anywhere outside his dwellings. When their daughter arrived, it started to feel more real. Each passing day that Evie was there getting closer to King Ben, David could feel that his hopes of seeing his wife again could turn to reality. By the time they had concocted the plan that would make it true, what was a faint idea of her reaction had become a detailed picture in his mind.

And still, perfect as it was in his imagination, it was nothing compared to what he was seeing now. No attempt made by his memory could’ve reproduced the brightness of her smile, so mighty it consumed him. Nothing could replicate the dulcet tones of her voice, the joy he felt in hearing the relief in it. And most of all, there was nothing he’d ever known to be as sweet as the taste of her lips against his.

David lets himself get carried into the moment all too gladly; they’d both waited long enough to earn the right to enjoy it for all they could muster. He holds her close, kisses her fiercely, and commits every last bit of this to memory so it could never be taken from them again. A need for air reminds him of the clock ticking against them, and it is with regret that he parts from her.

❛  We need to hurry.  ❜  He pulls away only enough to catch her gaze in his, with a hand cupping her cheek.  ❛  Me and Evie agreed to meet at the bridge in an hour. Get the things you need, we can’t be late.  ❜

heart soars, carrying her with it. her hands had not stopped moving aimlessly over him, hovering just far enough they didn’t touch, and though she doesn’t really know what he is saying, she can sense the urgency in his words. hurry. an hour. things you need. late. her mind was racing beyond her control, but when warm brown met steady blue she found herself grounded once more, stilling erratic movements.

‘   i have everything i need.   ’   her voice is soft, barely a whisper, but so sure as she looks at him a moment longer. regina had not brought any of her belongings to this place. she had assumed they would be destroyed or stolen, and evie brought that which mattered to auradon when she left. in this big, empty, crumbling castle all that she needed was those she loved, her family.

when she finally steps back, she doesn’t go far. she creates the space for them to begin moving, for she could stand there in his arms for the rest of her life if not prompted otherwise.   ‘   it’s not far from here, but it’s going to be dark soon. we should go now and wait there.   ’   a pause as she looks at his face once more, as if he could still disappear at any moment.   ‘   it will give me some time to yell at you about all of this before we see her.   ’   the smirk that plays on her face is bright and mischievous, light behind her eyes almost childish in its flickering. she could pretend there was a lecture awaiting him, but they both knew her joy would supersede any argument she could muster. though, he could not fully escape some sort of speech about the irresponsibility of their endeavor.   '   i can’t believe you let her send you on a quest.

Something about this feels easy to him, which is more than it could be said for any other part of his supposed re-entry into this world. Words of comfort, gestures of comfort are etched in his mind, and they all work on their own accord. Maybe, before the accident, he was always there for her like this. He was the someone she could rely on. Hopefully, he was good at it.

❛  Look, I know I don’t remember much, but I’m willing to bet you’re not the kind to give a crap about what others think of you.  ❜   He offers with a smile that turns to a small, breathless chuckle to cut through any remaining tension. He can even ignore the bit about sticking around, forgetting to feel awfully guilty about it.  ❛  You’re the mayor. You can’t always be pleasing everyone.  ❜

But maybe he did feel guilty, after all. The thought of her having to stick it out in this town alone, raising their son and dealing with the loss that came with his absence  –––  it’s a load for anyone to carry. He can figure why it could make her not so personable at times. David, despite the voice that tells him not to, leans closer to her and lays a kiss on her forehead. All he was ready for as they were.  ❛  Trust me, I’m not going anywhere.  I’m gonna stay well put in your corner.  ❜  And then he smiles, more to sell it to himself than her.

it baffled her, the way he so easily bent to comfort her. though his guilt and confusion were clear to her, the way he navigated this new world was unlike anything she expected. her own gentleness was feigned to sell a story that should never have been written. his kindness showed on instinct, though. no ulterior motive could be found and that unsettled her to her very core. it was unlike anything she had experienced in the last few decades of her life.

she wanted to get lost in the game, forget she was even playing, but that was dangerous, and strategy was of import. emma’s arrival to town caused a clear shift in their hidden corner of the world and damage control was required almost immediately. any slip could unravel the entire thing. the thought pushes a sigh from her lips, barely audible.   ‘   i don’t care what people think of me until it starts affecting henry. which it has. he really needs you right now.   ‘

the prince that regina remembers would never turn down a heroic quest, and if she could keep him occupied with some vague purpose it would hopefully distract him. she needed him present, but not present enough to realize that something was off about storybrooke.   ‘   these first few weeks are going to be hard on all of us, but i do. i trust you.  ’

❛  I’m gonna give you the chance to stop right now.  ❜  Announces Captain America, standing before her with his shield in hand and hands curled into fists. Despite his words, he was ready for a fight.  ❛  Let those people go and we can end this without anybody getting hurt.  ❜  He doubted she would take the offer. They never took the offer.

‘   what is it with you heroes and your chances ?   ’   raspy drawl drips from her lips, thick like honey. she’s leaning against the wall, arms crossed, supporting her weight with her hip.   ‘   you know, these things would be so much simpler for you if you would just do what needed to be done.   ’   dark brow is risen, click of her tongue echoing at the end of her sentence as her head shakes slowly. of course she wouldn’t take the offer.
